The 15% restocking fee, and what "not eligible for return" means

Both companies advertise 60-day returns. They do not mean the same thing.

North Shore Sauna: full refund inside 60 days. We do not refund original or return shipping. That is the entire policy, and it is published on our warranty and returns page.

Sweat Tent: returns are accepted within 60 days less a 15% restocking fee, the product must be in original condition and shipped in original packaging or it will not be accepted, and accessories and apparel are not eligible for returns at all.

On a $1,499 Large, 15% is about $225. On the $1,699 Pro Bundle, about $255. And if you bought the cedar bench at $249, the bucket and ladle at $49.99, or the hardwood flooring at $269 alongside it, those are not coming back regardless.

Keep the original box, too. A sauna tent arrives in several parcels, one of them a 40+ pound stove. Most people flatten that packaging in week one.

Rock capacity: 20 pounds vs. up to 80

Ask a lifelong sauna bather what matters in a stove and temperature will not be the first answer. Rocks will be. How many the stove can carry, and how many come in the box.

North Shore Sauna: our Standard stove holds 40 to 50 lbs of sauna stones in its rock basket. Our XL stove, built for the Nova 6 and Dome and for cold-climate owners, holds 70 to 80 lbs. Our thermal sauna stones are sourced from Northern Minnesota bedrock, and they ship in sets of 35 to 40 lbs.

Sweat Tent: every order ships with 20 lbs of sauna rocks, and Sweat Tent's own rock listing describes 20 lbs as the standard load for its stove's rock basket.

Put those side by side. A single set of our stones weighs nearly twice Sweat Tent's entire rock load. Our Standard stove holds up to two and a half times as much stone, and our XL stove holds up to four times as much.

Why more rock means a truer sauna

In a traditional Finnish sauna, the fire heats the stones and the stones make the sauna. Everything people love about a real session comes out of that rock mass.

Better löyly. Löyly is the wave of steam that rolls off the stones when you ladle water on them. A deep bed of hot stones turns each ladle into soft, enveloping steam. A shallow layer tends to hiss out a short, sharp burst and then go quiet. One independent Sweat Tent reviewer made a version of this point, noting the included rocks did not offer enough surface area to raise humidity much inside the tent. Round after round. Every pour pulls heat out of the stones. With a larger rock mass, the stones recover and you can keep throwing water through a long session. With 20 lbs, a few ladles can cool the rocks enough that the steam goes flat until the fire catches back up.

Softer, more even heat. Stones stacked around and above the stove body absorb and spread heat instead of leaving you facing hot bare steel. That is the difference between feeling baked on one side and feeling surrounded by heat.

Heat that outlasts the fire. A heavy stone load keeps radiating after the wood burns down, so the end of your session does not fall off a cliff.

A warranty that says it does not cover damage

Sweat Tent's product page states plainly that the one-year manufacturer warranty covers manufacturing defects in the tent, stove, and chimney and that it does not cover damage. Damage coverage is sold as a separate optional product, Sweat Tent Care+, added at checkout.

That is a legitimate business model and they are transparent about it. It is also worth understanding what you are buying. With North Shore Sauna, our one-year limited warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship, and we will repair or replace a defective product or component. There is no second product to buy to make the first one covered.

More practically: we sell replacement parts individually. Damage a stove panel and you order that panel. Sauna Marketplace has specifically credited us for building serviceability into the design rather than treating the stove as a disposable unit.

Take it down in a storm

Sweat Tent's own FAQ tells owners that for storms or high winds they should take the tent down to help prevent damage and preserve its lifespan. Their materials page repeats the recommendation for severe weather.

That is honest guidance and every tent has limits. But think about who buys a sauna tent. Our reviewers describe a permanent setup in the yard through multiple snowstorms, a Montana tent holding through heavy winds and snow, an Ohio owner running his three to five times a week through winter, and a customer who set up at a Vermont Airbnb at -20°F. One owner has kept a tent standing continuously from October through April since 2024.

For a lot of people in cold climates, "it lives in the backyard all winter" is the entire use case. Combine take-it-down-in-a-storm guidance with a warranty that excludes damage, and the winter reality is that severe weather is on you unless you bought the add-on.

Honest sizing: we rate for how many people actually fit

Capacity ratings are the easiest number in this category to inflate, because nobody checks them until the whole group is standing in the yard. We rate our tents for how many adults can sit comfortably, with safe clearance from the stove, on real benches. Not for how many bodies can technically stand inside.

Here is how the numbers work out.

Sweat Tent Large: 6' x 6', 36 square feet, rated for up to 6 adults. That is 6 square feet per person before you account for a 65-pound stove in the corner and benches on three walls.

North Shore Nova 4: roughly 50 square feet of interior on a pentagonal floor plan, rated for 4. About 12 square feet each, twice the room per person.

North Shore Nova 6: a 7.5' x 9' floor plan, rated for up to 6, with room for two full-size benches. About 11 square feet each. When we say six, this is what we mean, and it starts at $999.

To give credit where it is due: Sweat Tent's own copy describes the Large as comfortable at four and full at six. That is an honest line, and it matches what we would tell you. We just think the rating on the box should say the same thing the fine print does.

We would rather you be pleasantly surprised than disappointed. One Nova 4 owner told us they have had five adults inside easily, which is exactly the direction a capacity rating should miss in. If you want eight with standing headroom and room for benches, that is the Dome. Twelve is the SuperNova.

The gap in the Sweat Tent lineup is more telling than the density. There is no two-person tent and no four-person tent. If you are a couple, or a family of four, or someone with a small patio, the smallest thing they sell is a six-person tent at $1,499. What the sauna community says

This is where the two companies separate most clearly, and it is worth explaining what these sources are before quoting them.

The International Disciples of Sauna Tent is an independent Facebook group of thousands of sauna tent owners, started by an owner rather than a company. It is not affiliated with any manufacturer or distributor and it discusses every model including homemade builds. Members have been openly critical of brands over stove quality, smoke leakage, and unresponsive support, and the group functions as a de facto recommended list for the category.

North Shore Sauna is on that list. Sweat Tent is not.

Sauna Marketplace is an independent retailer that sells competing sauna tent brands and states that it bought a lot of junk before deciding what to carry. In its current buying guide, it ranks North Shore Sauna first and calls our stove the best in the category with no real debate. 

Two things should be said fairly here.

First, Sauna Marketplace sells our tents, so they are not a neutral party and you should weigh that. We are pointing you to their reasoning, not asking you to take their conclusion on faith.

Second, Sweat Tent's own customer reviews are strongly positive: 4.9 out of 5 across 401 reviews with 98% recommending. Those are real customers. The gap is not between happy customers and unhappy ones. It is between broad customer satisfaction and standing among the people who have used every tent in the category side by side and have no financial stake in which one you pick. Those are different signals, and the second one is harder to buy.

What Sweat Tent owners say

We read their reviews rather than assuming. Here is a fair summary.

The praise is real and specific. A Montana owner reports using it through days well below -20°F and still getting run out by the heat. Another describes reaching 200°F in 15 to 20 minutes in sub-freezing conditions. A northern Michigan family uses it daily and reported that when rocks were missing from their shipment, support replied right away and the rocks arrived a couple of days later. Multiple owners praise the standing height and the QuickPop frame.

The criticism is consistent across independent reviews. An independent three-month test found the carry bag seams separating after multiple packing cycles, and reported a working range of 180 to 200°F rather than the advertised 200°F+. That reviewer also summarized the most common owner complaints as a harder-than-expected first setup, a learning curve on fire management, and a combined weight that makes one-person transport over any distance a challenge. At 30 pounds of tent plus a 65-pound stove, that last one is arithmetic.

Nothing here suggests a bad product. It suggests a product that works, backed by policies that cost you more if it does not work out for you.

What North Shore Sauna owners say

North Shore Sauna sits at 4.89 stars across 281 verified reviews, every one of them published. The Nova 4 alone has 73, with 97% at five stars. Sauna Marketplace rates the Nova 6 at 4.67 and the Dome at 5.00.

Heat, in real winters. An Ohio owner clears 220°F in summer and holds 180 to 200°F through Ohio winters. A Montana owner exceeds 200°F on below-freezing nights. A Vermont setup at -20°F worked. Every model is tested with a Forensics Detectors VOC meter, because off-gassing is the most common complaint in this category and we would rather measure it than claim it.

Durability past the honeymoon. An owner 18 months in reports the materials have not shown much wear after a brutal winter. Another has run the tent from October through April since 2024. These are the reviews that tell you what a two-week review cannot.

The door. Several owners name the full-size, floor-to-ceiling corner door as their reason for buying. One called it his primary purchase driver and confirmed it was the right call after weeks of use. See it in the gallery.

The stove. Owners describe the build quality as worth every penny and note that it will not cook your legs the way other tent stoves do. It is also sold and serviced separately.

Support that shows up. A customer missing a chimney cap had a replacement shipped immediately. Another had a shipping problem resolved fast. Sauna Marketplace has documented us driving across the country to get a customer their sauna in time for an event after a shipment was held up.

The honest criticism. Ours are not spotless. Owners have flagged sharp burrs on stove panel edges from the cutting process, fixable with 320-grit but annoying. Two long-term owners noted black fabric fading toward gray in sustained sun and small tears in the rain cover screen after a year. One wants a UV-resistant full-coverage rain cover that does not block a window. We would rather print that than pretend it does not exist, and it is all on our product pages already.
