A hot tub filled with water weighs 3,000 to 6,000 pounds. That load has to sit on something engineered to hold it: a poured slab, pavers, or a reinforced deck. A sagging or uneven base will crack an acrylic shell, so this isn't a corner you can cut. Most mid-range and premium tubs also need a dedicated 50-amp or 60-amp GFCI circuit run from your panel, which in most jurisdictions legally requires a licensed electrician. If the tub sits 80 feet from the panel with a trench in between, that line item climbs fast. Then comes delivery, which often means a crane or a crew, and in many municipalities an electrical permit and sometimes a structural one.

A sauna tent needs level ground, clearance from anything flammable, and a chimney routed through the stock port. The bigger cost, in our experience talking to customers who've owned both, is attention. Water chemistry is a standing obligation. pH drifts. Sanitizer depletes. Skip it for a few weeks in August and you have a project, not a soak.

A wood-fired sauna has no standing cost at all. It consumes firewood on the days you use it and nothing on the days you don't. If you split your own wood, the marginal cost of a session rounds to zero. If you buy kiln-dried hardwood, budget a few dollars a session. Hot tub. Hot water immersion has its own credible literature, mostly from Japan. In a cohort of 30,076 middle-aged adults followed from 1990 to 2009, near-daily tub bathing was associated with lower rates of cardiovascular disease, coronary heart disease, and stroke compared with bathing once or twice a week. Frequent bathing was also associated with roughly a 20% lower chance of developing hypertension. Smaller studies have found improvements in arterial stiffness and endothelial function from regular hot water immersion.

Where they differ. A traditional sauna runs 170 to 200°F. A hot tub sits at 100 to 104°F, because water transfers heat far more efficiently than air and you couldn't tolerate more. The result is a meaningfully different heat load, a different core temperature response, and a different cardiovascular demand. Buoyancy. Water takes weight off joints in a way that sitting on a bench cannot. If you have significant arthritis, a recent joint replacement, chronic back pain, or mobility limitations, immersion offers something a sauna doesn't. That's a real clinical advantage, not a marketing point.

Heat tolerance. Some people simply cannot sit in 180°F air. Pregnancy, certain cardiovascular conditions, and some medications make high heat inadvisable. A 100°F soak is a gentler stimulus and may be the appropriate choice. Talk to your doctor either way.

Zero prep. Lift a cover, get in. No fire, no wait, no wood. For a household that will only use it on impulse, that convenience can be the deciding factor.

Social duration. People stay in a hot tub for an hour. Sauna sessions run 15 to 20 minutes per round. Different kind of hangout.

Can you have both?

Yes, and it's worth mentioning that many people who buy a sauna pair it with cold rather than warm water.
