If you have been looking into buying a portable sauna, you have probably noticed that the term gets used pretty loosely.

A portable sauna can mean an infrared blanket you zip yourself into, a small steam pod that plugs into the wall, or a full-size sauna tent heated by a wood-burning stove. All three are portable and all three can make you sweat, but they provide very different sauna experiences.

So, do portable saunas actually work?

Yes, but it depends heavily on which type you are talking about and what you expect it to do.

If your goal is to recreate the heat and experience of a traditional sauna, temperature is one of the biggest things to pay attention to. Traditional Finnish sauna research has generally looked at considerably higher temperatures than you will find in most infrared blankets or portable steam pods.

That difference matters.

What Does the Sauna Research Actually Look At?

One of the most commonly cited studies on sauna use comes from the Kuopio Ischaemic Heart Disease Risk Factor Study in Finland.

Published in JAMA Internal Medicine in 2015, researchers followed 2,315 middle-aged Finnish men for a median of 20.7 years. They found an association between more frequent sauna use and lower rates of sudden cardiac death and other cardiovascular outcomes.

There is an important detail that sometimes gets lost when this research gets used to market sauna products: the average sauna temperature in the study was about 79°C, or 174°F.

It is also important to understand that this was an observational study. It found an association between sauna use and cardiovascular outcomes, but it did not prove that sauna use directly caused those outcomes.

Still, it gives us a useful reference point for understanding the type of sauna exposure that has been studied most extensively.

The participants weren't sitting in 120°F steam pods with their heads sticking out. They were using traditional, high-temperature saunas.

That doesn't mean lower-temperature products have no value. It simply means you shouldn't assume that research conducted on traditional Finnish sauna bathing automatically applies to every product marketed as a "portable sauna."

So What Makes a Portable Sauna Work?

For us, this is where the conversation gets much simpler.

Look at the actual temperature the sauna can reach and maintain.

Sweating alone doesn't necessarily mean you are recreating a traditional sauna environment. You can sweat sitting outside on a hot summer day.

A traditional sauna creates sustained, high-temperature heat around your entire body. As your body tries to cool itself, heart rate increases, blood vessels near the skin dilate and circulation changes.

If you are shopping for a portable sauna because you want something comparable to a traditional sauna, we would pay much more attention to its operating temperature than whether the word "sauna" appears on the box.

Infrared Portable Saunas

Infrared blankets and pods are probably what many people picture when they hear "portable sauna."

Instead of heating the air around you to traditional sauna temperatures, infrared products use infrared energy to heat your body more directly. Most operate somewhere around 110°F to 140°F.

They absolutely have some advantages.

They are easy to store, generally inexpensive compared with a traditional sauna, don't require wood or a fire, and many can be used indoors. They can also make you sweat quite a bit.

For someone living in an apartment or without outdoor space, an infrared sauna may make much more practical sense than a wood-fired sauna tent.

The trade-off is temperature and experience.

Most infrared units don't produce anything close to the ambient temperatures of a traditional Finnish sauna. Many portable designs also leave your head outside of the heated area.

That doesn't make them bad products. It just makes them different products.

If you primarily want something convenient that gets you warm, helps you sweat and fits in a closet afterward, an infrared option may be exactly what you need.

If you're specifically trying to recreate a 180°F to 200°F traditional sauna session, it isn't going to provide the same environment.

Portable Steam Saunas

Portable steam pods are another popular option, particularly at the lower end of the price range.

These typically use a small electric steam generator connected to a fabric enclosure. Temperatures are generally much lower than a traditional sauna, often around 100°F to 120°F, but the high humidity can make the enclosure feel significantly hotter.

Some people love that feeling.

Steam can be relaxing, and these systems are relatively inexpensive and easy to set up indoors.

But again, you're dealing with a different type of heat exposure than a traditional sauna.

There is also a little more maintenance involved than people sometimes expect. A fabric enclosure that is regularly filled with warm moisture needs to be thoroughly dried between uses to prevent mildew and odors.

Wood-Fired Sauna Tents

This is the category North Shore Sauna operates in, so obviously we have a horse in this race.

But there is also a pretty straightforward reason we chose to build wood-fired sauna tents: they can get legitimately hot.

A wood-fired sauna tent combines an insulated tent with a wood-burning stove, chimney and sauna stones. The stove heats the air and stones inside the tent, and you can pour water over the stones to create löyly and control the humidity just as you would in a traditional Finnish sauna.

North Shore Sauna tents are tested to operate between approximately 180°F and 220°F.

That puts them in the same general temperature range as a traditional sauna and above the 174°F average reported in the Finnish study discussed earlier.

You are also completely inside the heated environment rather than sitting with your head outside of it.

For example, our Nova 4 is an 8' x 8' four-person sauna tent. In normal conditions, it can reach approximately 200°F in around 30 minutes from a cold start.

The tent itself weighs 42 pounds, packs down to approximately 54" x 10", and uses a pop-up hub design that can be set up in under 10 minutes once you are familiar with it.

All of them are designed around the same basic idea: make the sauna portable without turning it into a lower-temperature version of a sauna.

There Are Trade-Offs

A sauna tent isn't automatically the right answer for everyone.

The biggest limitation is obvious: a wood-burning sauna stove needs to be used outdoors. You cannot set one of these up in your apartment, garage, basement or living room.

You also have to build and manage a fire.

For some people, that's part of what makes the experience enjoyable. Starting the stove, getting the stones hot and sitting outside between rounds is part of the ritual.

Other people want to press a button and be sweating five minutes later.

If you're in the second group, a wood-fired sauna tent probably isn't your best option.

Weather matters too. A Nova 4 on a calm 60°F evening isn't going to heat exactly the same way it does during a Minnesota winter. Wind, outside temperature, wood quality and how aggressively you run the stove all affect heat-up time.

Your first setup will probably take longer than subsequent setups as well. Once you understand the tent, stove, chimney and stove jack, the process becomes much faster.

How to Compare Portable Saunas

If you're shopping around, don't get too caught up in marketing language.

Ask what temperature the sauna actually reaches.

Then go one step further and ask how that temperature was measured.

Was the thermometer at bench height or near the ceiling?

Was someone actually sitting inside the sauna?

What was the outside temperature?

How long did the sauna maintain that temperature?

Those details give you much more useful information than a single maximum-temperature number on a product page.

Heat naturally rises, so a thermometer near the ceiling can show a dramatically higher temperature than the area where you're actually sitting.

We also recommend putting your own thermometer inside whatever sauna you eventually purchase. You shouldn't have to take our word, or any other sauna company's word, for how hot your sauna gets.

Measure it yourself.

What We Still Want to Test

There are areas where we want better data on our own products too.

We have tested our sauna tents to the 180°F to 220°F range, and we know a Nova 4 can reach approximately 200°F in around 30 minutes under normal conditions.

What we haven't published yet is a complete performance curve for every model across different outside temperatures.

We would eventually like to show exactly how a Nova 4 performs at 40°F, 20°F, 0°F and below zero, along with things like average wood consumption and temperature retention between sauna rounds.

Being based in Duluth gives us plenty of opportunities to test sauna tents in legitimately cold weather, so those are numbers we intend to continue collecting.

Until then, we think temperature claims from any sauna company, including ours, should be treated as useful reference points rather than guarantees of exactly what you'll see every time you light the stove.

So, Do Portable Saunas Actually Work?

Yes. But "portable sauna" is too broad of a term to answer the question without knowing what kind of sauna you're considering.

An infrared blanket operating around 130°F can make you hot and sweaty.

A steam pod operating around 110°F can provide a warm, humid environment.

A wood-fired sauna tent operating around 180°F to 220°F can recreate the high-temperature, full-body environment of a traditional sauna.

Those are three different experiences.

None of that means you automatically need the hottest option. Your available space, budget, preferred heat, climate and how much effort you want to put into each session all matter.

But if your reason for buying a portable sauna is that you want the closest possible experience to a traditional Finnish sauna without permanently building one, we would look for something capable of maintaining traditional sauna temperatures with your entire body inside the heated space.
